History of Midland: How the Town Began
Midland started as a railroad town around 1913. This was when train service, through the North Carolina Railroad, first arrived. The town officially became an incorporated town in the year 2000.
Before Midland became a railroad village, there was a community called Garmon nearby. It was a few miles to the east and had a mill started by Michael Garmon in the late 1700s. Garmon even appeared on a map of North Carolina from 1864. Another community, Cabarrus Station, was also a railroad stop before Midland. It has since become part of the town of Midland.
In the past, Midland's economy was mostly based on farming. There were also some jobs related to making textiles (cloth). As the city of Charlotte grew, farming became less important. Now, many people who live in Midland travel to work in Charlotte or Concord. This means Midland has become a "bedroom community," where people live but work elsewhere.
The Reed Gold Mine is located just east of Midland. This is a very important place because it's where the first discovery of gold in the United States happened! Today, the Reed Gold Mine is a historic site managed by the state and is open for visitors. Gold mining was a big deal in this area in the 1800s, even before Midland was founded.
Several historic places in and around Midland are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These include the Bethel Church Arbor, the John Bunyan Green Farm, and the Robert Harvey Morrison Farm and Pioneer Mills Gold Mine.
Midland's Climate and Geography
Midland has a mild climate. Winters are cool, and summers are hot. Thunderstorms happen often when the weather is warm. Sometimes, there can be severe weather, and a few tornadoes have been seen in the area.
Snow falls sometimes in winter. You might see anywhere from zero to three big snowfalls in an average winter. The snow usually melts between storms, so it doesn't stay on the ground all winter. Even in November, you can sometimes enjoy nice warm days. Midland gets about 40 to 45 inches (1016 to 1143 mm) of rain each year.
The town is about 500 to 550 feet (152 to 168 meters) above sea level. The land is gently rolling, meaning it has small hills but no very high points.
The main roads that go through Midland are US Highway 601 and NC 24/27.
