Midland Oak facts for kids
The Midland Oak is a special oak tree that grows in Leamington Spa, a town in Warwickshire, England. It's located near the border of a place called Lillington, right where Lillington Road and Lillington Avenue meet.
The Famous Midland Oak
This tree is quite famous because it's believed to mark the center of England. Imagine a tree being at the very heart of a country! This idea makes the Midland Oak a unique landmark.
A Tree with History
The tree you see today isn't the original one. The first Midland Oak was a very old tree, hundreds of years old. People believed it marked the true center of England for a long time.
Sadly, the original old tree died. It was cut down in 1967. But its story didn't end there! An acorn from the old tree was saved. From this acorn, a new tree was grown. This new Midland Oak was planted around 1988, continuing the legacy of the original tree.
Near the tree, there's a special plaque. This plaque was put there in 1988. It tells the story of the old tree and how it was thought to be the center of England. It helps visitors understand the history and importance of the Midland Oak.
Protecting the Area
In 2002, a lot of work was done around the Midland Oak. There's an underground stream nearby called the Bins Brook. Sometimes, this stream could cause flooding in houses nearby. To stop this, the stream was uncovered, and a special basin was built to collect extra water. This project helped protect the homes in the area from floods. The Midland Oak survived all this construction work and continues to stand tall.
