Midlothian is a small community in Allegany County, Maryland. It's a special kind of place called a census-designated place (CDP). This means it's a community that the government counts for population, but it doesn't have its own city government. Long ago, it was known as Midlothian Junction. In 2010, about 320 people lived here. The ZIP code for Midlothian is 21543.

Midlothian is located about 2 miles (3.2 km) southwest of Frostburg, Maryland. It's easy to reach from Interstate 68 at Exit 33. The community is nestled at the eastern base of a large hill called Big Savage Mountain.

Many of the first people to settle in Midlothian were immigrants from Scotland. They named the area after a region near Edinburgh, Scotland.

History of Midlothian

Midlothian was once home to the Bowery iron furnaces. These were large furnaces that used coal to melt iron. They were built in 1868 by a company called Cumberland Coal and Iron.

The furnaces used iron ore found on a nearby hill. Limestone, another important material, came from a hill to the east. The furnaces made a product called pig iron. This pig iron was then sent by train to the city of Cumberland. The furnaces operated from 1874 to 1880.

A logging railroad also connected to Midlothian Junction. The Juniata Lumber Company had a sawmill in Midlothian. This sawmill was at the end of a 12-mile (19 km) long railway line. The line went into Garrett County along Big Savage Mountain.

A special type of train engine called a Class-B Climax was used to pull the logs. After the logs were cut at the sawmill, the lumber was shipped out. It traveled in boxcars on the Cumberland & Pennsylvania Railroad. At its busiest, the sawmill produced a lot of wood every day. This included railroad ties and other cut lumber. The sawmill closed down by 1913.
