Working at the Vatican

On November 20, 2007, Pope Benedict XVI asked him to be an advisor. He advised the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue. This council works to build good relationships between the Catholic Church and other religions. On June 30, 2012, Pope Benedict named him the Secretary of this Council.

On January 29, 2016, Pope Francis appointed him a Titular Bishop. This means he was given the title of bishop for a place that no longer has a bishop. Pope Francis himself ordained him as a bishop on March 19.

Promoting Peace and Dialogue

He played a key role in restarting talks between the Vatican and Grand Imam Ahmed el-Tayeb. The Grand Imam is a very important leader from the Al-Azhar mosque in Cairo. These talks had stopped in 2011.

Ayuso Guixot worked hard to bring people together. He said that the goal was to find "joint initiatives to promote peace." They also talked about the right to religious education and religious freedom for everyone. His efforts led to a special agreement called the Document on Human Fraternity. This document was signed by the Grand Imam and Pope Francis in February 2019 in Abu Dhabi. It talks about how all people are brothers and sisters, no matter their religion.

He also represented the Vatican on the board of directors for the King Abdullah Bin Abdulaziz International Centre for Interreligious and Intercultural Dialogue. This center was created in Vienna in 2012.

On May 25, 2019, Pope Francis appointed him the President of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue. This was a very important role in promoting understanding between different faiths. On October 5, 2019, Pope Francis made him a Cardinal Deacon. This is a high rank within the Catholic Church.
