Miguel Ángel Castellini (born January 26, 1947 – died October 28, 2020) was a professional boxer from Argentina. He was known for being a champion in the light middleweight division. This means he competed in a specific weight class in boxing.
Castellini was active in boxing from 1965 to 1980. He famously held the WBA and lineal light middleweight titles. He was a champion from 1976 to 1977. Miguel Ángel Castellini passed away due to COVID-19.
Becoming a Professional Boxer
Miguel Ángel Castellini started his professional boxing journey on May 28, 1965. His first fight was in San Miguel de Tucumán, Argentina. He won this first match by a knockout in the second round. A knockout happens when a boxer is hit so hard they cannot continue the fight.
Castellini had a great start to his career. He did not lose any of his first thirteen fights. His first loss came on September 9, 1966, against Hermogenes Quintela. Quintela won that fight by knockout in the tenth round.
Winning His First Title
On November 4, 1972, Castellini won his first major championship. He defeated Hector Ricardo Palleres to become the Argentine light middleweight champion. This was a big step in his career.
Castellini also fought in many different countries. His first fight outside Argentina was on May 25, 1974, in Monaco. He won that fight against Carlos Alberto Salinas. During his career, he also competed in Italy, Puerto Rico, Denmark, Nicaragua, and Spain.
Becoming a World Champion
One of Castellini's most important fights happened in Spain. He challenged Jose Manuel Duran for the WBA and lineal light middleweight titles. This was a huge event, with 12,000 fans watching.
Duran was the champion and was defending his title for the first time. Castellini knocked Duran down in the third round with a strong left punch. Even though Duran got back up, Castellini was faster and worked harder. Castellini won the fight by a split decision. This means that the judges had different opinions, but most of them chose Castellini as the winner. Both boxers had bloody faces by the end of the tough match.
Losing and Avenging the Title
Castellini's time as world champion was short. He lost his title in his very first defense. On March 5, 1977, he fought Eddie Gazo in Gazo's hometown of Managua, Nicaragua. Gazo won the fight by a unanimous decision. This means all the judges agreed that Gazo was the winner.
However, Castellini got his revenge later. On September 20, 1980, he fought Eddie Gazo again. This time, Gazo traveled to Argentina for the fight. Castellini won this non-title fight by knockout in the ninth round. This was also the last professional fight of Castellini's career.
