Who Was Miguel Mihura?
Miguel Mihura was born in Madrid, Spain, in 1905. His father was an actor and helped put on plays. When Miguel was in his twenties, he wrote Tres sombreros de copa. This play was very funny and unique. However, people in Spain before the war didn't quite understand its humor.
His Famous Play: Tres sombreros de copa
Even though he wrote it early, Tres sombreros de copa wasn't performed until 1952. When it finally came to the stage, it was a huge success! This play used "absurd humor." This means it showed silly or strange situations that didn't make much sense. It was a new style of comedy for Spain.
Working on Magazines
In the 1920s, Miguel Mihura wrote for a funny magazine called Gutiérrez. During the Spanish Civil War, he worked on another funny magazine called La Ametralladora. This magazine was made by one of the groups fighting in the war.
In 1941, he started his own funny magazine called La Codorniz. He owned and edited this magazine until 1944. He also wrote for other magazines like Mundo Hispánico and Vértice. At Vértice, he was in charge of the art from 1939.
Writing for Movies
Miguel Mihura also wrote many movie scripts for Spanish films. Some of his scripts were changed by people who checked movies (censors). One of his most important contributions was to the movie Welcome Mr. Marshall! (1953). This film was directed by Luis García Berlanga.
