Miguel Uribe Turbay (born January 28, 1986; died August 11, 2025) was a well-known Colombian politician. He was a member of the Senate of Colombia, which is an important part of the country's government. He belonged to the Democratic Centre political party. A political party is a group of people with similar ideas about how to run a country.
Uribe Turbay came from a family with a long history in politics. His grandfather was Julio César Turbay Ayala, who served as president of Colombia. In June 2025, Uribe Turbay was seriously hurt in a public attack. He passed away from his injuries two months later.

Background
Family and Early Life
Miguel Uribe Turbay was born in Bogotá, Colombia, in 1986. His family was very involved in Colombian politics. His grandfather, Julio César Turbay Ayala, was the president of Colombia from 1978 to 1982.
His mother, Diana Turbay, was a famous journalist. Sadly, she passed away when Miguel was a young boy. After her death, he was raised by his father, Miguel Uribe Londoño, who was also a politician and served as a senator.
Education
Uribe Turbay studied law and public policy at the University of the Andes. He also earned a master's degree in public administration from the Harvard School of Government in the United States.
Uribe was married to María Claudia Tarazona.
A Career in Politics
Bogotá City Councilor
In 2012, when he was 25 years old, Uribe was elected to the Bogotá City Council. A city council is a group of people who help make important decisions for a city. He was recognized as a promising new council member. In 2014, his fellow councilors chose him to be the president of the council.
During his time on the council, he often had different ideas from the mayor of Bogotá at the time, Gustavo Petro, about how to manage the city.
Secretary of Government
In 2016, Mayor Enrique Peñalosa appointed him as the Secretary of Government for Bogotá. This is a very important job in the city's government. At 30 years old, he was the youngest person ever to have this role. As Secretary of Government, he worked on projects to improve safety and daily life in the city.
Running for Mayor of Bogotá
In 2018, he decided to run for mayor of Bogotá. To get on the ballot, he and his supporters collected 400,000 signatures from citizens. Several political parties supported him, including the Liberal Party, Conservative Party, and the Democratic Centre.
His main goal was to continue the projects started by the previous mayor, Enrique Peñalosa. This included building a new metro system for the city. Uribe Turbay came in fourth place in the election. The winner was Claudia López.
Senator of the Republic
In 2021, former President Álvaro Uribe chose Miguel Uribe Turbay to be the top candidate for the Democratic Centre party in the Senate elections. This was a big decision in the party. Thanks to this, he was elected as a senator in March 2022 with a very high number of votes.
Presidential Pre-candidacy
In March 2025, Uribe Turbay announced that he wanted to be the Democratic Centre party's candidate for the next presidential election. He was one of several people in his party hoping to be chosen.
A Tragic End
On June 7, 2025, while speaking at a public event in Bogotá, Uribe Turbay was the victim of a violent attack. He was seriously injured and immediately taken to the hospital.
Hospital Care and Death
Doctors worked hard to save him. He had several surgeries and was cared for in the hospital's intensive care unit. Despite showing some signs of improvement, his condition remained very serious.
Sadly, after two months of fighting for his life, Miguel Uribe Turbay passed away on August 11, 2025. He was 39 years old. The country declared August 12 a day of national mourning to honor him.
Investigation
The police quickly detained a suspect after the attack. Authorities began an investigation to find out who was responsible for planning the attack. Others were later arrested in connection with the event.
