Mihai Volontir (born March 9, 1934 – died September 15, 2015) was a very famous actor from Moldova. He was known for his amazing performances in both movies and plays. Many people in the Soviet Union and Moldova knew him as a "People's Artist," which is a special title for talented performers.

Life and Acting Career

Mihai Volontir was born on March 9, 1934, in a village called Glinjeni, in what is now Moldova. He studied at a teaching school in Orhei from 1952 to 1955.
After finishing school, Volontir began working as an actor. He joined the Vasile Alecsandri Theatre in Bălţi in 1957. He worked there for his entire career, until he passed away in 2015.
Becoming a Movie Star
In 1967, after working in theatre for over ten years, Mihai Volontir started acting in movies. These films were made at the Moldova-Film studio. He became very well-known in the late 1970s. This happened after he starred in the movies In the Zone of Special Attention and a series of films called The Gypsy.
The Famous Character: Budulai
The "Gypsy" film series was incredibly popular. Mihai Volontir played a character named Budulai, a wise and independent gypsy. People loved his performance so much that he became strongly linked to this character. His acting even helped people in the Soviet Union be more understanding towards gypsy communities. The film series was so successful that new movies and a TV show were made about Budulai fifteen years later.
A Day of National Mourning
Mihai Volontir was a much-loved figure in Moldova. When he passed away on September 15, 2015, the day of his funeral, September 17, 2015, was declared a day of National Mourning in Moldova. This showed how important he was to the country.
