From 1975 to 1985, Mike worked as a studio musician in New York. This means he played piano for many different recordings. After that, he moved back to Australia.

In 1987, his album Open Door, which he made with drummer Frank Gibson, Jr., won the award for Best Jazz Album at the New Zealand Music Awards.
