Michael Anthony Wong was born on January 14, 1955, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He is a retired American ice hockey player. He played as a forward for the Detroit Red Wings. Wong played 22 games during the 1975–76 NHL season. Before playing hockey, he was also a Minnesota Golden Gloves boxing champion. He was chosen in the 1975 NHL Amateur Draft. Wong's family background is Chinese.

Michael Wong started his hockey journey playing junior hockey in Minnesota. He was a talented player from a young age.

Junior Hockey and Early Drafts

In 1974, Wong joined the American national junior team. He played in the 1974 World Junior Championships. This was the first time this tournament was held. It took place in Leningrad. Wong played in five games during the tournament. He did not score any points.

After that, Wong played for the Montreal Bleu Blanc Rouge. This team was part of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. In the 1974–75 season, he had a great year. He scored 27 goals and made 41 assists. This added up to 67 points.

Two different leagues wanted Wong to play for them. The Detroit Red Wings picked him in the 1975 NHL Amateur Draft. He was their 7th pick, 77th overall. He was also chosen by the Indianapolis Racers in the 1974 WHA Amateur Draft. The Racers were part of the World Hockey Association.

Playing for the Detroit Red Wings

Wong began the 1975–76 season with the Kalamazoo Wings. This team played in the International Hockey League. He scored 42 points in 39 games.

On October 11, 1975, Wong was called up to play for Detroit. His first game was against the California Golden Seals. He stayed with the Red Wings for 22 games. During this time, he scored one goal and made one assist. His plus/minus rating was -11.

For the next three seasons, Wong played for several teams. He split his time between Kalamazoo and other clubs. In 1976–77, he played for the Rhode Island Reds. They were in the American Hockey League. He then played for the Muskegon Mohawks in the IHL during 1977–78. His final season was 1978–79 with the Johnstown Wings. This team was in the North East Hockey League. He stopped playing professional hockey after the 1978–79 season.

Life After Professional Hockey

After retiring from pro hockey, Wong returned to Minnesota. He lived in Bloomington, Minnesota for several years. He played for the Buck's Unpainted Furniture U.S. senior elite team. He also married his high school sweetheart.

Later, he coached his son Jason's youth hockey teams. Jason grew up to play junior and college hockey in Minnesota.
