Mikhail Alexandrovich Ulyanov (born November 20, 1927 – died March 26, 2007) was a very famous actor from the Soviet Union and later Russia. He was one of the most well-known faces in Soviet theatre and movies after World War II. He received many high honors, including being named a People's Artist of the USSR in 1969 and a Hero of Socialist Labour in 1986. He also won a special award at the Venice Film Festival in 1982.

About Mikhail Ulyanov
Mikhail Ulyanov grew up in a town called Tara, Omsk Oblast. Even though he didn't pass his first acting school exams, he was determined to become an actor. In 1944, he moved to Omsk to study acting. After two years there, he went to Moscow and joined the Schukin Theatre School in 1946.
His Work in Theatre
Ulyanov started working at the Vakhtangov Theatre in 1950. He even became its director in 1987. He played many different kinds of characters on stage. One of his most famous roles was Rogozhin in Dostoevsky's play Idiot. In 1979, he directed a play called I have come to give you freedom, where he played the historical figure Stepan Razin. He also directed a play called The Child Buyer in 1985.
His Movie Career
In movies, Mikhail Ulyanov often played strong leaders, like Vladimir Lenin and Marshal Zhukov. His role as Yegor Trubnikov in the 1964 film Predsedatel (Chairman) became a classic in Soviet cinema and was one of his most important roles.
He also helped direct the 1969 film The Brothers Karamazov. This movie was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film and was shown at the 6th Moscow International Film Festival. He also starred in Tema (1979) and Private Life (1982). These films won top awards at the Berlin Film Festival and Venice Film Festival.
Later in his career, he was praised for playing Julius Caesar in a Shakespeare film in 1990. He also played Pontius Pilate in the 1994 movie The Master and Margarita. In 1999, he starred as an old soldier seeking revenge in The Rifleman of the Voroshilov Regiment. Mikhail Ulyanov passed away on March 26, 2007, due to an intestinal illness.
