Mikhail Yakovlevich Voronin (born March 26, 1945 – died May 22, 2004) was a famous gymnast from the Soviet Union. He competed in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Mikhail won many medals, including two gold medals at the 1968 Summer Olympics and two silver medals at the 1972 Summer Olympics.

Gymnastics Career Highlights

Mikhail Voronin trained at the Dynamo in Moscow. In 1966, he became an Honoured Master of Sports of the USSR. This is a special title for top athletes.

National and World Titles

Mikhail was a champion in his home country. He won national titles in the all-around competition from 1968 to 1971. He also won many titles on specific equipment. These included the rings, pommel horse, parallel bars, high bar, and floor exercise.

He also won big at the 1966 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships. There, he earned gold medals for the all-around and rings events.

European Championships Success

Mikhail Voronin was very successful at the European Championships too. He won 15 medals in total. His gold medals included the all-around in 1967 and 1969. He also won gold on the rings, parallel bars, and pommel horse.

Life After Competing

After the 1972 Olympics, Mikhail stopped competing. He then became a gymnastics coach. From 1973 to 1994, he was the head coach at Dynamo. Later, he became the president of the club until he passed away in 2004. He also led the Russian Gymnastics Federation for ten years.

Awards and Recognitions

Mikhail Voronin received several important awards. In 1969, he was given the Order of the Red Banner of Labour. This award recognized his hard work and achievements.

He also earned titles as an Honoured Trainer. He became an Honoured Trainer of the Russian SFSR in 1979. A year later, he was named an Honoured Trainer of the USSR. These titles show his skill and dedication as a coach.

The Voronin Gymnastics Move

A special gymnastics move on the horizontal bar is named after Mikhail Voronin. It is called the "Voronin element."

How the Voronin Element Works

The Voronin element is a difficult move. It starts with a back uprise. Then, the gymnast performs a piked vault. This vault includes a half turn (180 degrees) before the gymnast returns to hang on the bar. It's a challenging and impressive skill!

Family Life

Mikhail Voronin's first wife, Zinaida Voronina, was also a competitive gymnast. Their son, Dmitry Voronin, also became a gymnast.
