Mildred, Missouri facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Mildred is a small place in Taney County, which is in the southern part of Missouri. It's part of the beautiful Ozarks region. When we say "unincorporated community," it means it's a group of homes or buildings that isn't officially a town or city with its own local government. Instead, it's usually managed by the county.

Mildred is easy to find because it's located right on Missouri Route 76. You can find it south of a town called Forsyth and east of another place called Kirbyville.

History of Mildred

When Mildred Got Its Name

The community of Mildred has an interesting history, especially when it comes to how it got its name. A post office was opened there in 1910. This was an important step for the community, as post offices helped connect people and businesses.

How Mildred Was Named

The person who was in charge of the post office first was called a postmaster. This early postmaster decided to name the community after his own daughter. Her name was Mildred Price. So, the community of Mildred was named to honor her!

The Post Office Closes

The post office in Mildred stayed open for many years. It served the community from 1910 until 1934. After 1934, the post office closed down. Even though the post office is gone, the name Mildred still remains for this small community in the Ozarks.
