Mildred Esther Lovett was an important Australian artist and teacher. She was a key figure in the art world of Tasmania and Australia in the early 1900s. Mildred was born in Hobart, Tasmania, on September 13, 1880, and passed away on March 23, 1955.

Mildred Lovett's Artistic Journey

Early Education and First Jobs

Mildred Lovett started her art journey at Mrs H. Barnard's Ladies School in Hobart. She studied there from 1887 to 1893. Her art teacher was William Henry Charpentier. When she was 13, Mildred left school. She then worked as a photographic retoucher at McGuffie's Alba Studio in Hobart. This was one of the few interesting jobs available for young women at that time.

After this, Mildred spent five years at the Hobart Technical College. She learned many art forms there. These included painting, modelling, life drawing, and china painting. Her teachers were Ethel Nicholls and Benjamin Sheppard.

Becoming a Teacher and Artist

In 1901, Mildred moved to Sydney. She continued her studies at the Julian Ashton Art School. There, she learned from the famous artist Julian Ashton. She was so good that she became his assistant teacher.

By 1904, Mildred returned to Hobart. She began teaching in the Art Department of the Technical College. She soon got a full-time job there. She worked under the leadership of Lucien Dechaineux. By 1925, she was a main art instructor. Many of her students became well-known artists. These included Edith Lilla Holmes and Dorothy Stoner.

Important Art Achievements

Mildred Lovett was a very important person in the Hobart art scene. She was also a council member of The Art Society of Tasmania. She achieved many great things in her career.

In 1924, she represented Tasmania at the British Empire Exhibition in London. This was a big honor. In 1926 and 1927, she joined a group called the Group of Modern Painters. This group was started by George Lambert. They showed their art in Sydney.

In 1929, Mildred took a break from teaching. She traveled to Europe to study more art. She went to the Westminster School of Art in London. She also studied at the Academie Lhote in Paris.

Her Artistic Skills

Mildred Lovett was skilled in many types of art. She used oil, water, and pastel paints. She also created sculptures and miniatures. But she was most praised for her china painting. In 1913, a magazine called The Lone Hand said she was one of the best china painters in Australia.

One of her painted vases is now in the Art Gallery of New South Wales. It is seen as a key example of Australian art in the Art Nouveau style. Her artwork can also be found in the National Gallery of Australia and the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery.

Family and Marriage

Mildred Esther Lovett was born in Hobart, Tasmania, on September 13, 1880. She mostly lived in Tasmania and Sydney. She was the oldest of four children. Her parents were Edward Frederick Lovett and Alice Edith. Her father worked as a railway clerk, and they were a middle-class family.

In 1913, when Mildred was 33, she married Stanley Livingstone Paterson. For the 40 years of their marriage, Mildred was the main person earning money for the family. She sold her artwork and earned a salary from teaching. Mildred and Stanley did not have any children.

Later Life

Mildred retired from the Hobart Technical College in 1940. She then moved back to Sydney with Stanley. They lived there until Stanley passed away in 1952. Mildred Lovett died in Hobart in 1955. She was 75 years old.
