The military orchid, known scientifically as Orchis militaris, is a beautiful type of orchid flower. It grows naturally in many parts of Europe. This orchid is special because it's the main example for its group, called the Orchis genus.

What Does the Military Orchid Look Like?

This plant can grow quite tall, usually between 20 to 50 centimeters (about 8 to 20 inches). It has a strong stem and long, narrow leaves at its base.

The flowers grow in a tight, cone-shaped cluster. This cluster can have anywhere from 10 to 40 flowers, often with a purplish color. Each flower has petals and sepals that come together to form a pointed "helmet." This helmet is usually lilac on the outside and has purple veins on the inside. This unique shape is why it's called the "military orchid." The lower part of the flower looks like a tongue with two main parts and a small tooth in the middle.

When Does the Military Orchid Bloom?

The Military Orchid usually blooms in the spring and early summer. Depending on where it grows, you can see its flowers from April to June.

Where Does the Military Orchid Live?

This orchid loves sunny places with dry, chalky soil. You can often find it in meadows that aren't fertilized, along the edges of fields, or in light forests. It can grow at high altitudes, up to 2,000 meters (about 6,500 feet) above sea level.

Where Can You Find the Military Orchid?

The Military Orchid is found across much of Europe. It grows as far north as southern Sweden. However, it is less common in warmer Mediterranean areas.

In Britain, this orchid is very rare and is a protected species. It only grows in a few special places, like the Rex Graham nature reserve in Suffolk and certain areas in the Buckinghamshire Chilterns.

How Is the Military Orchid Used?

The Military Orchid contains a healthy substance called glucomannan. This is a type of polysaccharide, which is a complex sugar. The ground-up roots of this orchid are one of the original ingredients used to make a traditional drink called salep. Salep is a warm, milky drink that is popular in some parts of the world.
