The Milk River is a small stream located in Michigan, USA. It flows for about 1.7-mile-long (2.7 km) (2.7 kilometers). This river runs through Wayne County and Macomb County. Eventually, it empties into Lake St. Clair. You can find parts of the Milk River in the cities of Grosse Pointe Woods and St. Clair Shores.
The Hidden River
Did you know that a large part of the Milk River flows underground? This includes an area that was once a swampy place called the Black Marsh Ditch.
Why the River Went Underground
The decision to put the river into underground pipes was made a long time ago. On August 18, 1955, officials from the State of Michigan, Macomb County, and Oakland County met. They decided to contain and bury parts of the river.
Today, the Milk River is only open to the air after it passes the Milk River Pump Station. This station is located on Parkway Drive.
