Grosse Pointe Woods is a city located in Wayne County, in the state of Michigan, United States. In 2010, about 16,135 people lived there. This city is a suburb northeast of Metro Detroit and touches the city of Detroit on its southern side. It's one of the "Grosse Pointe" cities, but it's the only one that doesn't have a shoreline on Lake St. Clair.

History of Grosse Pointe Woods

While people started settling in this area over a hundred years ago, most of Grosse Pointe Woods as we know it today was built in the middle of the 20th century. A lot of construction happened around and after World War II. This makes Grosse Pointe Woods different from other, older parts of Grosse Pointe.

The city first became an official village in 1927. It was called the Village of Lochmoor. This was the last part of Grosse Pointe Township that wasn't yet part of a city or village. In 1931, the village added a piece of land called the Stanhope-Allard strip. This land used to be part of Gratiot Township. The village changed its name from Lochmoor to Grosse Pointe Woods in 1939. It officially became a city in 1950.

Geography of the City

Grosse Pointe Woods covers about 3.25 square miles (8.4 square kilometers) of land. It's the only one of the five Grosse Pointe cities that doesn't have a shoreline on Lake St. Clair. However, the city does own a park in the nearby city of St. Clair Shores that is located right on the lake.
