Mill Creek is a neighborhood located in the West Philadelphia area of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It stretches between 44th and 52nd Streets, north of Market Street and south of Girard Avenue. The neighborhood gets its name from a real creek, also called Mill Creek, which was put into a large underground pipe in the 1800s.

Discovering Mill Creek Neighborhood

Mill Creek is a vibrant part of West Philadelphia with a unique history. It's a place where old meets new, and where community spirit is strong.

What Happened to Mill Creek?

The neighborhood is named after the Mill Creek itself. This creek used to flow openly through the area. However, in the 19th century, it was covered up and directed into a large underground pipe. This was done to help develop the city.

In 1961, a part of this underground sewer system had a problem and collapsed. This event caused some homes in the area to be affected.

Homes and Community in Mill Creek

Mill Creek was once home to a large housing area called Mill Creek Apartments. These buildings were designed by a famous architect named Louis Kahn in the early 1950s. There were three tall buildings, each 17 stories high.

In 2002, these tall buildings were taken down. In their place, new, smaller houses were built. This new community was named Lucien Blackwell Homes. It was named after Lucien Blackwell, who was a congressman. A congressman is a person elected to represent their community in the United States Congress, helping to make laws for the country.
