Mill Creek (Patterson Creek tributary) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Mill Creek is a stream in Mineral County, West Virginia. It's about 8.7 miles (14 kilometers) long. This stream flows into a bigger one called Patterson Creek. You might also hear people call it Mill Run.

Where Mill Creek Begins and Flows

Mill Creek starts high up between two mountains: New Creek Mountain and Knobly Mountain. This starting point is called its 'headwaters.' From there, it flows south, right between these two big mountains.

After a while, the stream makes a turn and heads east. It goes through a spot called Grayson Gap, which is a break in Knobly Mountain. Once it's past Grayson Gap, Mill Creek gently winds its way through a small community named Antioch.

Next, Mill Creek turns northeast and flows towards another community called Markwood. Here, it runs right next to a main road, the Northwestern Turnpike (U.S. Route 50). The stream then continues east, passing by the Mill Creek Country Club and behind a historic place called Travelers Rest.

As Mill Creek keeps flowing east, it stays south of U.S. Route 50. Along its journey, two smaller streams, Dry Run and Sugar Run, join it. After Sugar Run adds its water, Mill Creek meanders through the town of Burlington. Finally, Mill Creek empties its water into Patterson Creek.

Streams That Join Mill Creek

Smaller streams that flow into a bigger stream are called 'tributaries.' Here are the streams that join Mill Creek, listed from where Mill Creek starts to where it ends:

  • Parrill Run
  • Dry Run
  • Sugar Run
