A Look at the Courthouse Design
The Mille Lacs County Courthouse shows off a style called Renaissance Revival. This style brings back ideas from old Roman and Greek buildings. It often includes grand features and careful details.
Outside Features
The outside of the courthouse is made from a special stone. This stone is called Bedford limestone. It covers a strong frame of reinforced concrete. The main entrance stands out with two stories. It has decorative concrete "turnings" on the corners. There is also a carved design in the center.
The windows of the building are also special. They have small balconies with railings. These balconies are called balustraded balconies. They add to the elegant look of the courthouse.
Inside the Building
The inside of the courthouse is just as impressive. The floors are made of terrazzo. This is a durable and decorative material. A unique skylight lets light into the building. It is made of leaded glass. This skylight is above an eight-sided open space called an octagonal atrium.
Marble steps lead from the front door to the first floor. They continue up to the second floor. Red wood is used for the woodwork throughout the building. This adds warmth and a classic feel.
Renovations and Upkeep
In 1978, the courthouse had some updates. The building was renovated by a company from Minneapolis. They helped keep the historic building in good condition. This ensures it can continue to serve the community.
