History of the Millennium Tower
Building the Tower: Early Ideas and Pauses
The Millennium Tower and another building, the Burnham Building, stand where a famous department store called Filene's used to be. When Filene's closed, the building was sold. A company called Vornado Realty Trust bought it. Vornado then worked with Gale International to plan a big project. They wanted to spend $700 million to rebuild the Filene's site.
In August 2007, the city approved their plan. It included a 39-story tower with a hotel, a restaurant, office space, 166 homes, and shops. There would also be a park nearby. The project was supposed to be finished by 2011. To make way for the new buildings, the old Filene's building had to be taken apart. This meant closing the Filene's Basement store and 218 people lost their jobs.
In the summer of 2008, the builders stopped the project. This happened because of a big financial crisis that affected the whole country. At that time, most of the old buildings had been torn down. The Burnham building was empty inside, and there was a large hole where other parts of Filene's used to be. The side of the Burnham building that was now open was covered with a tarp. After two years of no work, the City of Boston took back the building permits in November 2010.
New Owners and Construction Begins
In 2012, a new company called Millennium Partners took over the project. They got approval to build a 625-foot tower. It would have 1.2 million square feet (110,000 m2) of space for businesses and homes. This space would be spread across two buildings.
On April 13, 2013, a big advertising company called Arnold Worldwide agreed to rent a large part of the new building. With this agreement, construction started again. The building officially began construction on September 17, 2013. Boston's mayor, Thomas M. Menino, was there for the event. On April 26, 2014, 600 trucks poured a huge amount of concrete for the building's foundation. It was the largest concrete pour in Boston's history.
What's Inside the Tower Today
By 2013, it was already planned that a Roche Bros supermarket would be in the building.
An article from August 2016 in Boston Globe said that many luxury homes in the tower had been bought. Buyers came from Boston, other parts of the Asia and Europe. A manager from Millennium Partners thought that 75% of the owners would live in their homes in Downtown Crossing.
