Millicent Mary Chaplin (1790 – 1858) was an artist from England. She is mostly known for her beautiful watercolour paintings. These paintings show what Canada looked like in the 1800s.
Her Life and Art
Millicent Mary Reeve was born in Leadenham, a town in Lincolnshire, England. In 1838, she moved to Lower Canada (which is now part of Canada). She traveled there with her husband, Thomas Chaplin. He was a soldier in a group called the Coldstream Guards.
For four years, Millicent painted many pictures of Canada. She painted the landscapes of places like Ottawa, Quebec City, and the Canadian Maritimes. She also painted pictures of the local people she met. Besides her own original works, she also copied paintings by other artists. Some of these artists included James Hope-Wallace, Henry William Barnard, and Philip John Bainbrigge.
Millicent Mary Chaplin passed away in 1858 in Normanby Park, Lincolnshire, England.
Her Legacy
Today, her artworks are kept in important collections. You can find her paintings at the National Archives of Canada and the Royal Ontario Museum.
In 2004, a special book was published. It was called Drawing on the Land: The New World Watercolours and Diaries (1838-1942) of Millicent Mary Chaplin. This book shared many of her watercolours and the journals she wrote during her time in Canada. Jim Burant edited the book. (ISBN: 1894131614})
