Milliken Creek is a stream in Napa County, California. It flows for about 11.9-mile-long (19.2 km). This creek is a "tributary," which means it's a smaller stream that flows into a larger one. Milliken Creek flows into the Napa River.
About Milliken Creek
Milliken Creek starts high up in Foss Valley. This is about 5 mi (8 km) east of Yountville. From there, it flows downhill. Eventually, it reaches the Napa River in Napa, California. The area of land that drains into Milliken Creek is called its "watershed." This watershed covers about 7,300 acres (3,000 ha).
The Watershed's Land Use
A watershed is like a big bowl where all the rain and water flow into one main stream or river. In the Milliken Creek watershed, about 90 acres (36 ha) of the land is used for vineyards. Vineyards are places where grapes are grown. The creek also flows through the Silverado Country Club.
History of the Land
A long time ago, much of the land around Milliken Creek was part of a large Mexican land grant. This grant was called Rancho Yajome. It was given to a general named Mariano G. Vallejo. For many years, until at least 1869, most of this watershed was a wild, natural area. Later, the lower parts of the watershed began to be used for farming. People used the land for pasture, which means fields for animals to graze, and other agricultural activities.
Fish in the Creek
In 1989, scientists did a study of the stream. This study was done by a group called Earth Metrics. They found that the population of steelhead trout was very healthy. Steelhead are a type of fish. They found many of these fish living in the creek, even near the Silverado Country Club. This showed that the creek was a good home for these fish.
