Millwood is a small, unincorporated community in Collin County, Texas. An unincorporated community is a place where people live that isn't officially a city or town with its own local government. In 1986, only about 10 people lived in Millwood. It is located within the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, which is a large area with many cities and towns close together.

History of Millwood

Early Days and the Gold Rush

Millwood started during the exciting time of the California gold rush. This was when many people traveled to California hoping to find gold. Travelers from Texas, often called "forty-niners," needed places to buy supplies and food. Texas didn't have many stores or good roads back then.

Drury Anglin owned land where Millwood is now. He saw all the travelers and decided to open a general store on his farm. This store helped many people passing through.

How Millwood Got Its Name

After a few years, a small community grew around Anglin's store. It was named Millwood because there was a lumber mill nearby. A lumber mill is a place where logs are cut into wood for building.

On May 21, 1851, Millwood got its own post office. This was a big step for the growing community.

Growth and Decline

By 1885, Millwood had grown quite a bit. About 100 people lived there, and it had several businesses. These included a church, a flour mill (which grinds grain into flour), a gristmill (another type of mill for grinding grain), and a cotton gin (a machine that separates cotton fibers from their seeds).

However, Millwood never grew larger than it was in 1885. A major reason for this was the St. Louis Southwestern Railway. This railway line was built, but it didn't go through Millwood. Instead, it went through a nearby town called Wylie. This made it hard for Millwood to compete with Wylie, which had better transportation and business opportunities because of the train.

Millwood's Population Shrinks

Because the railway bypassed Millwood, the community started to shrink. On December 14, 1907, the post office in Millwood closed. Mail was then sent to Royse City instead.

Over the next 30 years, fewer and fewer people lived in Millwood. By 1940, only 10 people and one business remained in the community. These numbers stayed the same in 1986.

Where is Millwood Located?

Millwood is found in the southeastern part of Collin County. It sits on the east fork of the Trinity River. If you were to travel from Millwood, it's about 10 miles (16 km) east of Wylie. It's also about 4 miles (6.4 km) northwest of Royse City.

Education in Millwood

In 1885, Millwood had its own school for local children. Today, students in the Millwood area are part of the Community Independent School District. This school district serves several communities.

Children living in Millwood attend specific schools within this district. They go to McClendon Elementary School, Leland E. Edge Middle School, and Community High School.
