The Milne big-eyed tree frog (Nyctimystes persimilis) is a type of tree frog found in Papua New Guinea. It gets its name from the Milne Bay Province where it lives. This frog is known for its large eyes.
About the Milne Big-Eyed Tree Frog
This special frog was first discovered by scientists in 1958. It's a fascinating creature that lives high up in the mountains of Papua New Guinea.
What It Looks Like
The Milne big-eyed tree frog is a medium-sized frog, usually about 3.7 to 5.0 centimeters (about 1.5 to 2 inches) long. That's roughly the length of your thumb!
When it's alive, this frog can be light brown with patches of green or brown. Some frogs are olive gray with darker brown patches. It also has small teeth in its upper jaw.
Where It Lives
This frog lives only in Papua New Guinea, making it an endemic animal. Scientists have found it on mountains like Mount Dayman and Mount Simpson. These areas are quite high up, between 1,370 and 1,400 meters (about 4,500 to 4,600 feet) above sea level.
The Milne big-eyed tree frog prefers to live in forests and wetlands. It stays away from coastal areas, preferring the cooler, higher elevations.
