Milo Andrus (born March 6, 1814 – died June 19, 1893) was an important early leader in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He helped many people and played a big part in the church's history.

Milo Andrus: An Early Church Leader

Milo Andrus was born in Wilmington, New York. His parents were Ruluf Andress and Azuba Smith. In 1832, he joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This happened in Florence, Ohio.

Building Temples and Serving Missions

Milo Andrus was very dedicated to his faith. He helped build several important temples. These included the Kirtland, Nauvoo, Salt Lake, and Saint George temples. Temples are special buildings for religious ceremonies.

He also served as a missionary for the Church. In the early 1840s, he traveled to England. There, he taught people about his beliefs.

Leading Pioneers to Utah

Milo Andrus was a key figure in the pioneer movement. He led three large groups of pioneers. These groups traveled in wagon trains. They journeyed from the Midwest to the Salt Lake Valley in Utah. He led these trips in 1850, 1855, and 1861.

He held many important roles in the Church. He was a Bishop in Nauvoo. He also served as a Stake President in St. Louis. Later, he became a member of the Quorums of the Seventy. At the time of his death, he was serving as a Patriarch.

Mormon Grove: A Pioneer Outfitting Site

In 1854, Milo Andrus suggested a new place for pioneers to get ready. This site was for people traveling to Utah. It was located near Atchison, Kansas. This new spot was needed because of health problems at older sites.

The new place was called Mormon Grove. It was close to the Missouri River. Pioneers needed work to earn money for their journey. Atchison needed workers to help build the town. So, Mormon Grove was a good match for everyone.

Milo Andrus was in charge of Mormon Grove in 1855. About 160 acres of land were used. A fence made of sod was built around it. Farmers planted 30 to 40 acres of crops. This was to provide food for the pioneers. This farm was called the Perpetual Emigration Farm. Soon, Mormon Grove became a busy tent city.

In 1855, 2,041 people and 337 wagons left Mormon Grove for Utah. Milo Andrus led one of these wagon trains. While in St. Louis, he gave many speeches. One person who joined the church because of his speeches was Heinrich Eyring. Heinrich later became a leader in the Indian Territory Mission in Oklahoma.

Other Contributions

Milo Andrus was also involved in community service. He was a major in the Nauvoo Legion. This was during the Utah War. He also served as a chaplain for the Utah State Legislature. A chaplain is a religious leader who serves an organization.

He helped build many roads in Utah and Southern Idaho. These roads were important for travel and trade.
