Milton "Milt" Cuyler, Jr. was born on October 7, 1968. He is a former professional baseball player. Milt played as an outfielder in Major League Baseball (MLB).
He was chosen by the Detroit Tigers in the 1986 amateur draft. In 1991, he was a top rookie. He finished third for the Rookie of the Year award. The winners were Chuck Knoblauch and Juan Guzman.
Milt Cuyler's Early Life
Milt Cuyler grew up in Macon, Georgia. He went to Southwest High School there. He was very good at both baseball and football.
In 1986, the Detroit Tigers picked him in the baseball draft. He was the 46th player chosen overall. Milt had also planned to play college football at Florida State. He would have played alongside Deion Sanders, another great athlete.
But Milt decided to play baseball full-time. The Tigers offered him a $75,000 bonus to sign with them. Even so, his football coach said he could always come back to football later.
Baseball experts thought Milt was one of the Tigers' best young players. Baseball America ranked him highly for four years in a row.
Playing Professional Baseball
Milt Cuyler started his major league career with the Detroit Tigers. His first game was on September 6, 1990. He was 21 years old. He played as a defensive replacement in right field.
Soon, he started playing regularly in center field. He usually batted ninth in the lineup. In 1991, the Detroit Tigers named him their Rookie of the Year. He was also third in the voting for the American League Rookie of the Year award.
After a few years, Milt left the Tigers after the 1995 season. He then joined the Boston Red Sox for the 1996 season. He played in 50 games for them.
Later, he played seven games for the Texas Rangers in 1998. He spent the 1999 season in their minor league system. After that, he stopped playing professional baseball.
In his career from 1990 to 1998, Milt Cuyler played in 490 games. He had 329 hits and 10 home runs. He also had 119 runs batted in. His career batting average was .237.
After Baseball
After he stopped playing, Milt Cuyler became a hitting coach. He coached for the Gulf Coast League Twins until 2013.
In 2011, Milt Cuyler was honored in his hometown. He was added to the Macon, Georgia Sports Hall of Fame.
