Milton "Milt" Cuyler, Jr. (born October 7, 1968) is a former professional baseball player. He played as an outfielder in Major League Baseball (MLB). The Detroit Tigers chose him in the 1986 amateur draft. He was a top rookie in 1991, finishing third for the American League Rookie of the Year award.

Early Life and Sports Talent

Milt Cuyler grew up in Macon, Georgia. He went to Southwest High School. Milt was very good at both baseball and football. He was so talented that he was offered a chance to play college football at Florida State University. He would have joined famous player Deion Sanders there.

Choosing Baseball

The Detroit Tigers drafted Milt in 1986. They picked him in the second round, as the 46th player overall. The Tigers offered him a $75,000 bonus to sign with them. This made him decide to play baseball full-time. Even so, his football coach at Florida State said he could still come back to play football if he wanted.

Baseball America magazine thought Milt was one of the Tigers' best young players. They ranked him highly for four years in a row. He was seen as a very promising player for the team's future.

Professional Baseball Career

Milt Cuyler started his MLB career with the Detroit Tigers. His first game was on September 6, 1990. He was 21 years old at the time. He played as a defensive replacement in right field. Soon, he became a regular player in center field.

Rookie Season Success

In 1991, Milt had a great first full season. The Detroit Tigers named him their Rookie of the Year. He also finished third in the voting for the American League Rookie of the Year award. This award goes to the best new player in the league. Chuck Knoblauch won the award that year.

Later Career and Retirement

After his strong rookie year, Milt played for the Tigers until 1995. He then joined the Boston Red Sox in 1996. He played in 50 games for them. In 1998, he played seven games for the Texas Rangers. He spent 1999 in their minor league system. After that, he stopped playing professional baseball.

Over his career from 1990 to 1998, Milt Cuyler played in 490 games. He had 329 hits, 10 home runs, and 119 runs batted in. His career batting average was .237.

After Playing Baseball

After retiring as a player, Milt Cuyler became a hitting coach. He worked for the Gulf Coast League Twins until 2013. In 2011, Milt was honored for his sports achievements. He was inducted into the Macon, Georgia Sports Hall of Fame.
