Miltiadis Evert (Greek: Greek: Μιλτιάδης Έβερτ; born May 12, 1939 – died February 9, 2011) was an important Greek politician. He was a member of the Greek Parliament and served as a government minister many times. He also led a major political party called New Democracy.

Where Miltiadis Evert Came From

Miltiadis Evert was born in Athens, Greece. His father, Angelos Evert, was the chief of police in Athens during World War II. Angelos Evert is remembered for helping to save many Jewish people and freedom fighters from danger during that time. The Evert family originally came from Bavaria, a region in Germany. They moved to Athens in the early 1800s when King Otto ruled Greece.

Miltiadis Evert went to college at the Athens University of Economics and Business. This is where he studied and prepared for his future career.

Serving as Mayor of Athens

From January 1, 1987, to May 14, 1989, Evert was the Mayor of Athens. This means he was in charge of running the city of Athens. During his time as mayor, he did something very important for Greek media.

Starting the First Private Radio Station

In 1987, when Evert was mayor, all radio and TV stations in Greece were controlled by the government. He used a new law that allowed for opposition radio broadcasting. He helped start Athena 98.4 FM, which became the first legal private radio station in Greece. This was a big step for freedom of speech in the country.

Leading a Political Party

Miltiadis Evert also served as the leader of the New Democracy party. He was the chairman of this party from 1993 to 1997. This made him a very influential figure in Greek politics. He also held many different minister positions in the government over the years.

Miltiadis Evert's Family Life

Miltiadis Evert was married to Lisa Vanderpool. She was a photographer and the daughter of an American archaeologist named Eugene Vanderpool. Miltiadis and Lisa had two daughters together.

On February 9, 2011, Miltiadis Evert passed away in Athens. He was 71 years old.
