Milton is a small, unincorporated community located in Albemarle County, Virginia. An unincorporated community means it's a place with a shared identity. However, it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Instead, it's part of the larger county.

Milton's Early History

Milton played an important role in Virginia's past. Long ago, during the "batteaux era," Milton was a key spot for river travel. A "batteau" was a special type of flat-bottomed boat. These boats were used to move goods along rivers.

River Travel and Trade

Milton was known as the "head of navigation" along the river. This meant it was as far upstream as these boats could easily travel. Goods like tobacco and other farm products were loaded onto batteaux here. They were then shipped downriver to larger markets.

The Rise of Canal Boats

By the mid-1800s, things began to change. New "canal boats" were developed. These boats could travel even further upstream. They could reach all the way to Charlottesville. Charlottesville then became the new main hub for river trade. It was located where two important roads met: Fredericksburg Road (now VA 20) and Three Chopt Road (U.S. Route 250). This shift made Charlottesville the new center for shipping goods.
