Milton is a small, quiet place in Calaveras County, California. It's called an unincorporated community, which means it doesn't have its own local government like a city does. It sits about 394 feet (120 meters) above sea level. Milton uses ZIP code 95684 and area code 209.

Milton's History

Milton was started in 1871. This happened when the Stockton and Copperopolis Railroad line was finished. This railroad later became part of the Southern Pacific Railroad. The town got its name from a railroad engineer named Milton Latham.

Milton was a very important spot back then. It was the end of the railroad line. This made it a "staging point" for travelers. People would get off the train here. Then, they would continue their journeys by wagon or stagecoach to other places.

A post office was also opened in Milton in 1871. It helped people send and receive letters and packages. However, this post office closed down in 1942.

Milton: A California Landmark
