History of Mineral
Mineral was first called Tolersville. It changed its name in 1902 when it officially became a town. The new name, "Mineral," came from the many mines in the area.
Mining in Mineral
Mineral was a very important place for gold mining in Louisa County. At one time, there were fifteen gold mines close to the town. There was also a mine for zinc and lead that operated until the 1970s.
Historic Places in Mineral
Several places in and near Mineral are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These include Cuckoo, the Harris-Poindexter House and Store, and the Mineral Historic District. These places are important because they help us learn about the past.
The 2011 Earthquake
On August 23, 2011, a strong earthquake happened near Mineral. It had a magnitude of 5.8. The earthquake was felt far away, from Florida to Canada. In Mineral, the roof of the town hall collapsed. Three of the six schools in the county were also badly damaged. Luckily, no one died, and only a few people had minor injuries.
