The Minersville Historic District is a special neighborhood in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. It's a place where you can see many old homes and buildings. This area was once a busy community for people who worked in local factories and mines. It's officially recognized as a historic district because of its important past.
A Look Back at Minersville
Minersville is one of several historic areas around Johnstown. These places show how industrial towns in western Pennsylvania grew in the 1800s. Minersville was closely linked to the old Cambria Iron Lower Works. This was a big factory where iron was made.
Homes and Buildings
The Minersville Historic District has 92 homes and one club building. Most of these were built between 1880 and 1945. The neighborhood grew a lot in the early 1900s. Many of these homes were built by the company for its workers.
Surviving the Flood
Minersville is located on a hillside. This helped it survive the terrible Johnstown Flood of 1889. Many other parts of Johnstown were destroyed, but Minersville was safe because it was higher up.
A Recognized Place
In 1995, the Minersville Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's a place of national importance. That same year, students from the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown used the district as a training site for their research.
