Minié ball facts for kids

How the Minié Ball Changed Warfare
Before the Minié ball, bullets were often hard to load into rifled guns. Rifling means adding spiral grooves inside a gun barrel. These grooves make a bullet spin as it leaves the gun. This spin helps the bullet fly straight and far.
Older bullets had to be forced down the barrel. Sometimes, soldiers even needed a mallet to push them in. After a few shots, gunpowder would build up in the grooves. This meant soldiers had to clean their guns often.
The Minié ball solved this problem. It was small enough to be loaded easily into a rifled gun. But when fired, the bullet expanded. This expansion made it fit tightly into the rifling grooves. This allowed the bullet to spin and fly accurately.
The Minié Ball in the American Civil War
The Minié ball was widely used during the American Civil War. Both the American Springfield Model 1861 and the British Pattern 1853 Enfield muskets used this bullet. These were the most common weapons in the war.
The Minié ball caused serious injuries to soldiers. It often shattered bones when it hit. This made it very difficult for doctors to treat the wounded. The severe damage led to many amputations during the war.
