The Ministry of Health (Indonesian: Kementerian Kesehatan) is a special part of the Indonesian government. Its main job is to take care of public health for everyone in Indonesia.

History of the Ministry of Health

The Ministry of Health was created on August 19, 1945. This was right after Indonesia became independent. Its main goal was to look after the health of all Indonesian people.

Leaders of the Ministry

The ministry is led by a person called the Minister of Health. This minister works closely with the President of Indonesia. They are also a part of the President's main team, known as the cabinet. Most ministers have been medical doctors. Some have even been military doctors.

Funding for Health Programs

Since 2009, the government has aimed to spend at least 5% of its national budget on health. This goal was finally reached in 2019. This money helps fund many health programs across the country.

Changes Over the Years

In 2001, the Ministry of Health briefly joined with the Department of Social Affairs. They formed the Department of Health and Social Welfare. However, this merger did not last long. Both departments soon became separate again.

Later, in 2009, a new government rule changed how ministries were named. The "Department of Health" officially became the "Ministry of Health." This change made it clear that it was a full government ministry.

Research and Policy Changes

In 2021, a big change happened for the National Institute of Health Research and Development (NIHRD). This institute used to do a lot of health research. It was decided that NIHRD would become the Agency for Health Policies Development.

This new agency would focus on creating health rules and standards. The actual research part of NIHRD was moved to another agency. This was the National Research and Innovation Agency. This change helped make health policies more focused.
