The Ministry of Justice of the People's Republic of China is a very important part of the Chinese government. It works under the State Council, which is like the country's cabinet. This ministry is in charge of all things related to law and justice in China.

How the Ministry of Justice Started

The Ministry of Justice has an interesting history. It was first created on October 30, 1949. Back then, it was called the Ministry of Justice of the Central People's Government.

In September 1954, its name changed to the Ministry of Justice of the People's Republic of China. This happened after China adopted its first Constitution. However, in 1959, the ministry was closed down for a while.

It was brought back in 1979 by the Standing Committee of the Fifth National People's Congress. This showed how important it was to have a dedicated ministry for justice. In March 2018, another government office, the Legislative Affairs Office, joined the Ministry of Justice. This made the ministry even bigger and more powerful.

How the Ministry of Justice Works

The main person in charge of the Ministry of Justice is called the Minister of Justice. This role is similar to an Attorney General in some other countries. The Minister makes sure all the different parts of the ministry work together.

The Ministry of Justice also includes an important office called the Office of the Central Comprehensive Law-Based Governance Commission. This office helps make sure that laws are applied fairly across the country.

Managing Prisons

One of the big responsibilities of the Ministry of Justice is overseeing most of China's prisons. This is done through the MOJ Bureau of Prison Administration. This bureau makes sure prisons are run properly. However, one special prison, Qincheng Prison, is managed by a different group, the Ministry of Public Security. As of 2015, Liu Zhenyu was the head of the prison administration department.
