Minnehaha is a small place located in El Paso County, Colorado. It is called an "unincorporated community" because it does not have its own local government, like a city or town. Instead, it is part of the larger county.

Minnehaha is also a "siding" for the Pikes Peak Cog Railway. A siding is a short extra track next to a main railway line. It allows trains to wait there while other trains pass by, or to switch tracks. The name Minnehaha comes from a character in a famous poem called The Song of Hiawatha.

A Look Back at Minnehaha

Minnehaha was once a popular spot for people to build summer homes. These were often simple, "rustic" cabins. Families would come here to escape the heat and enjoy the natural beauty of the mountains during the warmer months.

The Pikes Peak Alpine Laboratory

Minnehaha was also home to an important science center called the Pikes Peak Alpine Laboratory. This lab was a "botanical research station." This means that scientists there studied plants, especially those that grow in high, cold places like mountains.

The lab was started by two famous scientists, Frederic Clements and Edith Clements. They were a husband and wife team who spent their lives studying how plants grow and change in different environments. Their work at Minnehaha helped us learn a lot about how mountain plants survive and thrive.
