Miranda is a small coastal area in the Far North region of South Australia. It's located right in the southeastern part of the City of Port Augusta. This area sits between the Adelaide-Port Augusta railway line and the beautiful coast. The main road, the Augusta Highway, also runs along the Miranda side of the railway line.

Exploring Miranda's Nature

Much of the land in Miranda is part of the Winninowie Conservation Park. A conservation park is a special place where nature is protected. This includes the entire coastline of Miranda.

Protecting Sea Life

There's also the Yatala Harbour Upper Spencer Gulf Aquatic Reserve in the middle of Miranda's coast. An aquatic reserve helps protect the plants and animals that live in the water.

Red Cliff Point: A Special Rock Spot

Inside the conservation park, you'll find Red Cliff Point. This spot is very important for its geology, which is the study of rocks and how the Earth was formed. It's listed on the South Australian Heritage Register because of its unique rocks.

Miranda's History

A government town was planned and mapped out in Miranda in December 1880. This means people officially decided where streets and buildings would go. Later, the town grew to include a nearby area called Herdes Beach Shack Site. Shack sites are places where people have small, simple holiday homes, often near the beach.

How Miranda Grew

The current, larger area of Miranda was officially named in 1994. This new boundary included the original town, a lot of rural land, and another shack site further north called Chinaman Creek Shack Site.

The Old Railway Station

There used to be a railway station called Nectar Brook right on the border of Miranda. However, this station closed down completely by 1986.

Miranda's Population

According to the 2011 census, the population of Miranda was 47 people. This number included some rural areas just outside its official boundaries.
