Key Intersections

A very important road intersection is in Winninowie. This is where Horrocks Pass Road meets the main Augusta Highway. Horrocks Pass Road is also known as Main North Road. These roads help people travel across South Australia.

Local Government and History

Winninowie is unique because it is split between two different local government areas. These are like local councils that manage services for the community. Part of Winninowie is in the City of Port Augusta. The other part is in the District Council of Mount Remarkable.

Railway History

A railway line also runs through Winninowie. A special stop for trains, called a railway siding, opened here in 1936. Today, a "crossing loop" is still there. This allows trains to pass each other on the single track.

Post Office Services

Winninowie also had its own Post Office a long time ago. It opened on September 1, 1880. However, it closed down on May 31, 1928.

How Winninowie Got Its Name

The boundaries for the Winninowie locality were officially set in 1994. The name "Winninowie" comes from an older area called the Hundred of Winninowie. A "hundred" was a type of land division used in the past.

Aboriginal Origin

The name itself has an Aboriginal origin. This means it came from the language of the first people to live in Australia. Even though the name comes from the Hundred of Winninowie, the modern locality of Winninowie is actually located in a different hundred, called the Hundred of Davenport.
