Miranda Palace facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Miranda Palace is a really old and cool building located in the small village of Prelo. This village is part of the Boal area in Asturias, a beautiful region in northern Spain. The palace was built a long, long time ago, between the 1400s and 1500s. Because it's so important to history and culture, it was officially named a "well of cultural interest" in 1982. This means it's a protected landmark, like a national treasure!

What is the Miranda Palace?

The Miranda Palace wasn't always as big as it is today. It started as a simple square tower with three floors. Over time, more parts were added to it. At first, the tower had only small windows, but these were made bigger later on.

How the Palace Looks

The main part of the palace has different heights because the ground it's built on isn't flat. On one side, it has two floors, and on the other, it has just one. Right above the main entrance, you can see a large coat of arms. This is like a special family symbol, and it belongs to the González de Prelo y Castrillón family, who owned the palace.

The Palace Chapel

The palace also has its own chapel, which was built in 1776. This chapel has a rectangular shape. Inside, you can find two special altarpieces. These are like decorated screens behind the altar, and they are painted in black and white with a fancy style called Rococo. There used to be old wooden sculptures from the 1600s and 1700s inside, but they had to be moved because the chapel's ceiling was in bad shape.

Connecting Parts

Between the old tower and the chapel, there's another section of the palace. This part has cool corridors that are held up by strong stone columns. Imagine walking through these old hallways!

The Palace Today

Today, the entire Miranda Palace has been carefully fixed up and restored. It has been turned into a fancy four-star hotel. So, now people can stay there and experience what it's like to live in a historic palace!
