Miriama Smith was born in Rotorua, New Zealand. She is of Te Arawa Māori descent. She began her acting career as a teenager, appearing in TV commercials. Her first role in a TV show was in an episode of Shark in the Park.

In 2001, she acted in the movie The Other Side of Heaven. A few years later, in 2004, she landed her big international role in Power Rangers Dino Thunder as the character Elsa. The show was filmed in her home country of New Zealand.
