Mirrool is a small town in the northern part of the Riverina region of south-west New South Wales, Australia. This area is known for its farming and beautiful landscapes. The town is located within the Bland Shire local government area. It sits right next to the Newell Highway, a major road that connects many places. Mirrool is about 473 kilometers (about 294 miles) southwest of Sydney, the capital city of New South Wales. In 2011, Mirrool and the nearby areas had a population of 234 people.

The name Mirrool comes from an old word used by the local Indigenous Australians. It means "Pipe Clay," which is a type of soft, white clay.

A Glimpse into Mirrool's Past

Mirrool had its own Post Office, which opened on November 16, 1911. It served the community for many years before closing in 1982. A railway station also opened in 1908 when the train line was built. This line helped people and goods travel to and from the town. Trains stopped carrying passengers in 1983, and the station closed completely in 1985.

The Historic Mirrool Hotel

One of the most important buildings in Mirrool is its old hotel, often called a "pub" in Australia. It was built between 1913 and 1916 and first opened its doors in 1917. This hotel is a central meeting place for the community.

Not long ago, the hotel was almost sold to someone in Sydney. This would have meant the town could lose its important gathering spot. But a group of local farmers worked together to save it! They bought the hotel's special permit, which allowed it to keep operating. This shows how much the community cares about their town's history and meeting places.

Fun and Games in Mirrool

Mirrool is a small town with a big love for sports! It has its own football oval. Even though Mirrool is in New South Wales, the main sport played here is Australian rules football. This is because the town is in a special area where this sport is very popular. This area stretches north from the Canola Way and is centered around the Newell Highway.

The Famous Silo Kick Competition

Every second Saturday in October, Mirrool hosts a very special event: the Silo Kick Competition! People who love Australian Rules Football come from all over to compete. The challenge is to kick a football over the huge 32-meter (about 105-foot) silos that are located right across from the hotel.

This exciting event started in 1992. The first winner was a famous player named Billy Brownless. Sometimes, the "winner" of the competition is actually the silos themselves, meaning no one manages to kick the ball over them! It's a fun tradition that brings the community together.
