Mirza Mohammed Taqi Shirazi was an important religious and political leader. He was known as a Grand Ayatollah, which is a very high rank for a Shia Muslim scholar. He was from both Iran and Iraq. He is famous for leading the Iraqi revolt of 1920. He was sometimes called 'al-Mirza al-Thani', meaning 'the second Mirza'.
Early Life and Learning
Mirza Mohammed Taqi Shirazi was born in 1840. His father was Mirza Muhib Ali Golshan Shirazi. His uncle, Mirza Habibullah Shirazi, was a well-known poet from Iran.
In 1854, when he was about 14 years old, Shirazi moved to Karbala. There, he started his religious studies. He learned from important teachers like Sheikh Zayn al-Abideen al-Mazandarani. He also received special permissions, called ijazas, to teach from other scholars.
Later, he moved to Samarra with his teacher, Mirza Shirazi. They wanted to make Samarra a new center for Shia learning. In Samarra, Shirazi spent his time teaching and giving lectures at the religious school. After his teacher passed away, Shirazi took over the leadership of the school in Samarra.
He stayed in Samarra until 1916. The situation in the city became difficult and unsafe. Shirazi worried that Samarra would become dangerous, like the city of Kut during a tough time. So, he moved to Kadhimiya. He lived there for almost two years before finally settling in Karbala.
