Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Miró II of Cerdanya and I of Besalú (born around 878, died 927) was an important leader in a region called the eastern Pyrenees mountains. He was a "count," which means he ruled over an area called a "county."

Miró II was the count of Cerdanya from 897 to 927. He also became the count of Besalú from 920 until he died in 927.

His Family and What He Ruled

Miró II was the son of a powerful leader named Wilfred the Hairy. Wilfred was the Count of Barcelona. When Wilfred died, his lands were divided among his children.

Miró II received the county of Cerdanya from his father. His brother, Sunifred, became the count of Urgell. Their other brothers, Wilfred II Borrell and Sunyer I, became counts of Barcelona.

Later, in 920, Miró II also inherited the county of Besalú. He got this land after his uncle, Radulf of Besalú, passed away. Miró's sister, Hemmo (also known as Emma), became the head of a special religious place called the Monastery of Sant Joan de les Abadesses. Their father had started this monastery.

What Miró II Did

Miró II continued the important work his father had started. He helped to restore and improve churches and religious life in the area known as Berga. This means he supported the church and helped rebuild its influence in that region.

  • Gotruda of Cerdanya (born around 920, died around 963): She married a man named Lope I of Pallars.
