History of Miss International
The Miss International pageant began in Long Beach, California, United States. This happened in 1960. It started after the Miss Universe pageant moved to Miami Beach.
Long Beach hosted the pageant until 1967. Then, from 1968 to 1970, it moved to Japan. It was held in the same city as the Expo '70. In 1971, it returned to Long Beach for one year.
Since then, Japan has been the main host country. The pageant is usually held there in autumn, either in October or November. The first winner in 1960 was Stella Araneta from Colombia.
Goals of the Pageant
The Miss International pageant aims to help women live with confidence. It encourages them to be positive and strong. The pageant also wants to help people around the world understand Japan better. Its main goal is to achieve world peace through understanding each other. A newer slogan for the pageant is "Cheer All Women."
Notable Moments in History
In 2012, Ikumi Yoshimatsu from Japan won the title. She was the first winner from Japan. However, she could not crown her successor. This was due to a conflict with a talent agency. Instead, Miss International 2008, Alejandra Andreu, crowned Bea Santiago in 2013.
In 2017, Kevin Lilliana Junaedy from Indonesia made history. She became the first Muslim woman to win Miss International. The pageant was canceled in 2020 and 2021. This was because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Japanese government also stopped international events at that time.
