Early Life and Music
Walter Horn Jr. was born in Shelby, a town in Mississippi. He grew up in Greenville, Mississippi. When he was a young man in the early 1960s, he worked as a tractor driver. But even then, he loved to sing and performed in local clubs. This was how he started his journey in music.
Becoming Mississippi Slim
In 1968, Walter decided to move to Chicago to chase his dream of becoming a full-time singer. It was there that he started using the stage name Mississippi Slim. He became well-known in Chicago's blues clubs. People remembered him for his colorful hair and clothes that didn't quite match! He even toured with other famous blues singers, like Junior Wells. In 1974, he recorded a song called "Crying In The Arms of Another Love," which was released by Sunflower Records.
Later Years and Legacy
Mississippi Slim returned to live in Mississippi in 1994. He kept performing in local clubs and at music festivals. He also became very involved in a special program called "Blues In Schools." This project helped teach young people about the history and importance of blues music. In 1999, he recorded his own album, which he named Miracles.
Mississippi Slim passed away in 2010 in Greenville, Mississippi, at the age of 66. He suffered a severe heart attack. He left behind a legacy as a dedicated blues musician and someone who cared about sharing music with new generations.
