Misty is a classic children's film from 1961. It is based on the popular book Misty of Chincoteague by Marguerite Henry. This book won an award in 1947.
The story is about two young orphan children. They form a special bond with a group of wild ponies. These ponies live on an island off the coast of Virginia. One of these real-life ponies was named Misty.

Misty and the Big Storm of 1962
The coast along the Atlantic Ocean often has strong weather. The year after the Misty movie came out, a very bad winter storm hit. This storm was one of the worst Nor'easters ever seen there. It became known as the Ash Wednesday Storm of 1962.
During this huge storm, the Beebe family owned the real Misty. They brought her inside their home to keep her safe. Soon after, Misty gave birth to a baby horse, called a foal. The children named the new foal "Stormy." This exciting event inspired author Marguerite Henry to write another book. It was called Stormy, Misty's Foal and came out in 1963. Henry had also written an earlier sequel, Sea Star: Orphan of Chincoteague, in 1949.
The Lasting Impact of Misty
The books and the movie Misty helped make Assateague Island famous. Because of the popularity of Ms. Henry's stories and the film, much of Assateague Island was protected. In 1965, a special law was passed. It made the island a Assateague Island National Seashore. This means it is now managed by the National Park Service. This helps keep the island safe from too much building.
The yearly "Pony Swim" and auction still happen on Virginia's Eastern Shore. This event helps both the people of Chincoteague and the wild pony herds.
Misty is still a favorite family movie today. You can find it on home video and DVD.
