Mitcham railway station is a train stop in Adelaide, Australia. It's part of the Belair Line and is located in a suburb called Lower Mitcham. The station is about 8.5 kilometers (around 5 miles) away from the main Adelaide station.

Station History

Mitcham station first opened its doors in March 1883. It was built when the train line connecting Adelaide to Aldgate (and eventually Melbourne) was finished. Even though it's in Lower Mitcham, the station was almost called 'Lower Mitcham' at first. But they decided to name it 'Mitcham' before it opened. In the past, a famous long-distance train called the Melbourne Express used to stop here.

Mitcham was an important meeting point, or "junction," for train lines going to Clapham and Sleeps Hill. Mitcham and Blackwood are special because they are the only stations between Goodwood and Belair that have more than one platform in use. This allows trains to pass each other, making the train service smoother.

In 1995, a big project changed the train tracks. This was part of the "One Nation" plan to update the Adelaide-Melbourne line. The third platform on the western side of the station was changed to a standard gauge track. This means the distance between the rails was made wider to match most other train lines in Australia.

Nellie's Garden

The beautiful garden at Mitcham railway station is known as Nellie's Garden. It is named after Nellie Iris Ellis (1920-1983). Mrs. Ellis was the wife of a former station manager, and she started this lovely garden. Today, volunteers help to keep the garden looking nice. It is one of only five public gardens looked after by the City of Mitcham.

In 2019, parts of a movie called Escape from Pretoria were filmed at the station and in Nellie's Garden. During the filming, trains did not stop at Mitcham station for a short time.
