History of Belair Station
Belair station first opened in 1883. It was part of the new train line connecting Adelaide to Aldgate. The station is in a beautiful spot right next to the Belair National Park.
A Popular Spot for Visitors
In the past, many people would travel by train to Belair on weekends. They came to enjoy the nearby National Park. A large wooden shelter was built around the 1890s for these crowds. There used to be a refreshment room too, but it's not there anymore.
Station Changes Over Time
In May 2003, some parts of the old station were damaged by fire. The building is now being rebuilt using special materials. There are also special tracks called "stabling sidings" where trains can be parked overnight. These are often used for trains that finish their journeys here during busy times.
Until 1987, trains used to go further into the Adelaide Hills to a town called Bridgewater. These trains were stopped because they cost a lot to run and not many people were using them. After that, all local trains started ending their journey at Belair station.
In 1995, the train line from Adelaide to Melbourne was changed. It was made into a "standard gauge" line. This meant that the local trains could no longer go to Bridgewater. Now, between Goodwood and Belair, there are two separate tracks. One track is for Adelaide Metro trains, and the other is for bigger interstate freight trains.
