The Mitchell River is a cool river in British Columbia, Canada. It flows into the Quesnel River. This river is about 30 kilometers (19 miles) long. It starts high up in the mountains.

The Mitchell River is special because it flows through natural lakes. Almost half of its journey is through these lakes. Its water eventually travels all the way to the Pacific Ocean.

Where the Mitchell River Starts

The Mitchell River begins in the northern Columbia Mountains. These mountains are home to many glaciers. Glaciers are huge, slow-moving rivers of ice. The melting ice from these glaciers feeds the river.

The River's Journey Through Lakes

After starting in the mountains, the Mitchell River flows generally southwest. It first enters Mitchell Lake. This lake is about 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) long. It sits in the middle of the river's path.

From Mitchell Lake, the river continues its journey. It then flows into Quesnel Lake. The last 10 miles (16 kilometers) of the Mitchell River are actually part of Quesnel Lake. Both Mitchell Lake and Quesnel Lake are natural bodies of water.

Connecting to the Ocean

The Mitchell River is a tributary of the Quesnel River. This means it flows into the Quesnel River. The Quesnel River then flows into the mighty Fraser River. The Fraser River is one of the longest rivers in British Columbia. Finally, the Fraser River carries all this water to the Pacific Ocean. So, a drop of water from the Mitchell River could travel a very long way!
