Mitie's Journey: How the Company Grew

Starting Small: Mitie's Early Days

Mitie was started in 1987 by David Telling and Ian Stewart. It was first called MESL. Just one year later, the company's shares were first sold on the London Stock Exchange. This allowed more people to invest in the company.

In 1989, MESL joined with another company called Highgate & Job. After this, the company changed its name to the Mitie Group.

Expanding Services: Growth in the 2000s

Throughout the 2000s, Mitie grew by buying other businesses. In 2006, it bought Initial Security, a big security company. In 2007, Mitie acquired Robert Prettie & Co. Ltd. This added plumbing, heating, and mechanical services to its offerings.

Mitie continued to grow in 2008 by buying Catering Partnership and DW Tilley. The purchase of DW Tilley helped Mitie offer roofing services across the country. In 2009, Mitie bought Dalkia Facilities Management. This greatly improved its technical facilities management skills. It also started working in social housing by buying Environmental Property Services (EPS). In 2010, Mitie also acquired Dalkia's facilities management business in Ireland.

Mitie in the 2010s: New Challenges and Changes

In 2012, Mitie entered the health and social care sector. It bought a homecare company called Enara. In 2013, Mitie's chief executive, Ruby McGregor-Smith, joined the board of the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. Mitie also updated its company look in 2014.

Between 2013 and 2015, some cleaning staff working for Mitie raised concerns about their pay. These discussions happened at places like the Royal Opera House and the Palace of Westminster.

In 2014, Mitie began an eight-year contract with the Home Office. This made it a major provider of services for government facilities. Mitie continued to work in this area.

Mitie also secured a cleaning contract with Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust in 2014. This contract was worth a lot of money over seven years. There were some challenges with managing staff well-being and pay in certain hospital contracts.

By 2014, Mitie realized its homecare business was not as profitable as expected. It also found it hard to find and keep enough care workers. In 2015, East Sussex County Council ended a contract with Mitie for home care services. This was due to difficulties in providing care. In response to these challenges, Mitie decided to stop offering homecare services for the elderly in 2016.

In 2016, Mitie's share price dropped. The company noted that the expected growth in outsourced services was not happening as quickly. There were also questions about how the company reported some of its financial information in 2016. Mitie later clarified these details.

In 2017, after some financial warnings, Ruby McGregor-Smith left her role. Phil Bentley, who used to manage British Gas, became the new Chief Executive.

In 2020, Mitie announced plans to buy Interserve's facilities management business. This deal was completed in December 2020. This acquisition meant that about half of Mitie's work was now for the public sector.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Mitie provided many important services. These included running Covid testing sites and cleaning offices. They also cleaned major transport services and provided security for quarantine hotels. The company worked with government departments like the National Health Service and the Ministry of Defence.

In 2023, Mitie won a four-year contract with Network Rail. This contract, worth £280 million, brought together four previous agreements. Mitie now provides full facilities management for over 800 railway sites across the UK. In the same year, Mitie also acquired four security-related businesses. These were Biservicus Group, GBE Converge Group, R H Irving, and Linx International Group.

In February 2025, Mitie partnered with Elements Green. This partnership was to design their Staythorpe battery energy storage systems. Mitie also announced plans to acquire Marlowe, a fire safety services business, in June 2025.

What Mitie's Name Means

The name Mitie stands for Management Incentive Through Investment Equity. This means that managers often invested their own money in the business. If the company did well and met its goals, these managers could sell their shares for a profit. This system encouraged managers to work hard and help the company succeed.
